Department of Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in the academic year 2009. From the inception, the department encourages an environment for producing technologists through innovative teaching learning methodologies. The department has well-experienced and qualified teaching faculties, having specialization in Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design and Development, Energy Technology and Thermal Engineering. The faculty members are pursuing their research work in reputed universities and presenting their findings in various conferences. Department has full-fledged infrastructure and for the course of study, the department has well equipped eight laboratories, providing academic, self learning and project work. The department has Mechanical Engineering students Association (MESA) for the conduct of student career development programmes to expose their hidden technical skills. The students are motivated to participate in various inter-collegiate events and conferences to present their academic projects and inventions. The students are motivated for higher studies and research work through various guest lecturers, workshops, seminars, symposia, career guidance programmes etc., being conducted in a scheduled manner. Industrial visits and industry sponsored projects are also made mandatory to gain industry related exposure in real time challenges. The total number of students, graduated from this department is more than 200.

Our mission is to provide an excellent education in all mechanical related fields. Our main task is to prepare students for careers in industry or to pursue higher studies. Upon graduation, our students will be able to perform higher studies in all fields relating to mechanical. A part of our mission is to provide teaching environments that emphasize depth, originality and critical thinking.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES (POs)

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
  8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice.

  1. Analyse specific engineering problems relevant to Mechanical Engineering by applying the knowledge of basic sciences, engineering mathematics and engineering fundamentals.
  2. Design, develop; manufacture and test the society needed products / processes using the significant analytical knowledge in Mechanical Engineering by applying modern tools.
  3. Apply the contextual knowledge of Mechanical Engineering to assess societal,environmental, health, safety, legal and cultural issues with professional ethics and function effectively as an individual or a leader in a team to manage different projects in multidisciplinary environments as the process of life-long learning..

In this Lab well equipped with all advanced machine equipments. Students can learn easy to accessing operated, machine. This lab has lathe, milling, grinding, planner, shaper, drilling, foundry sections, welding section with booth the operated scheduling, process creation new things.

This lab has various types of engines like petrol and a diesel engine with various stokes and mores tested the operated scheduling, process creation new things. Familiar with computer simulators type also used.

This lab serves as a guide for learning and implementing the new data sheet structure in an auto cad. It basically deals with how to make management and draw with using operations on data with basics comments and also operating machining programmes and analysis and cad /cam design. The aim of the course is to teach students abstract to develop design engineer .

This lab aims at providing students the knowledge about the qualified the measuring work pimech with the help of this lab equipments to be used like veriner, micrometer, profile projectors, bevel producter, sine bar, slip gauge etc.

This lab aims at providing students the knowledge about the qualified the measuring speed with the help of this lab equipments to be used like governors, static balancing, dynamic balancing, wrilling of shaft , cam jump, cam profile, spring balancing systems, and also some of study process to be used etc.

This lab aims at providing students the knowledge about the qualified the measuring and control speeds with the help of combined with mechanical and electronics equipments. In this lab equipment to be used like open loop, closed loop, servo motor, stepped motor, single and double acting cylinder operated systems to be used and ect,.


MECH department has an active engineering Association functioning. Name of the association is MESA–MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS ASSOCIATION. This Association is started at 2010 with help of principle Dr.Ganapathy Phd, mother sr.Reginal SAT, Mr. Thriumavalavan M.E,. And all teaching and non teaching, with all department students’ Technical seminar and national level symposiums are conducted to give ample opportunities to budding engineers to show their talents. Students are enriched with technical knowledge to be competitive in the employment sector

Title: Webinar on "CAD in Construction using Bentley Software”

Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in association with Alumni Cell has arranged a Webinar to raise awareness of "CAD in Construction using Bentley Software” on 30 th October, 2023 at Mechatronics Laboratory, Maria Block. The program's resource person was Mr. Jerry David Jayapaul, Project Designer, AECOM Pvt ltd, Bangalore. . There were about 65 Second, Third and Final-year students from the department of Mechanical Engineering who actively participated in the programme. A prayer song was played during the session. Mr.Premkumar, III/MECH welcomed the gathering. Dr.D.Ommurugadhasan, HoD/MECH felicitated the event with his thoughtful address to the students. A brief introduction of the resource person was given by, Mr.Aravidan IV/MECH. At the end of the introduction, the resource person was honored by Dr.D.Ommurugadhasan, HoD/MECH.

 

The session was then turned over to the resource person, Mr. Jerry David Jayapaul,. The main elements of Mr. Jerry David Jayapaul, speech was as follows:

• Leverage our digital solutions to connect and streamline how your firm designs, builds, and delivers infrastructure.

• Highlighted the importance and need of Bentley Software”

• A student said the guest lecture was highly informative and interactive.

Another student mentioned that he could gain some basic concepts on Bentley software.

After the feedback from students, they delivered the vote of thank Mr.Aravidan IV/MECH. The programme then ended with the National Anthem.

Title: Guest Lecture to raise awareness of “Recent Trends in Future of Tidal Energy”

Description:

The Energy Club, Department of Mechanical Engineering, organised a Guest Lecture to raise awareness of “Recent Trends in Future of Tidal Energy” on the 26th August, 2023 at the Mechatronics Laboratory. The Resource Person was Mr. Vaithiyanathan Shanmugam, B.E., General Manager, Asia Power Hydraulics, Puducherry. The Third and Final Year Students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering actively participated in the Programme.

The Programme started with the Prayer Song. Mr. Premkumar G., III Year/Mechanical Engineering, welcomed the gathering. A thought-provoking Felicitation Speech was delivered by Dr. D.  Ommurugadhasan, HOD/Department of Mechanical Engineering. Then, Mr. Premkumar G., III Year/Mechanical Engineering, gave a brief introduction of the Resource Person. Dr. D. Ommurugadhasan, HOD/ Department of Mechanical Engineering, honoured the Resource Person with a memorable gift.

Mr. Vaithiyanathan Shanmugam in his speech highlighted the importance and need of Renewable Energy in the Power Production Field, explained renewable energy which helps us get employment opportunities and also explained the working of Tidal Energy Power Plants. The students who participated in the Programme were of the opinion that the Guest Lecture was highly informative and interactive.

At the end of the Programme, Feedback Letters were collected from the students. Mr. Aravindan S., IV Year/Mechanical Engineering, delivered the Vote of Thanks. The Programme ended with the National Anthem.

Title: INDUSTRIAL SAFETY -Workshop

Description:

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) and Mechanical Engineering Industry Institute Interaction Cell (MEIII CELL) organized a one day workshop on the topic of “INDUSTRY SAFETY” on 26th August 2022. Mr.M.Sivamanikandan, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical welcomed the gathering Mr. M. Athithan, Senior Production Engineer, TVS Sundaram Fasteners Limited, Puducherry, was the resource person for this one day workshop. Dr. D. Ommurugadhasan, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering addressed the gathering.                          The Mechanical Engineering students actively participated and interacted with the resource person. 

The Resource person delivered about 

 

1. Safety is a concept that includes all measures and practices taken to preserve the life, health, and bodily integrity of individuals.

2. Enhanced safety training can be an important part of meeting and exceeding your own high standards.

3. These can and should involve workers from all authority levels within the company, including, but not limited to, supervisors, safety specialists, employees and volunteers.

4. They set strict schedules for maintenance work, professional inspections and safety checks. They also make it a point to upgrade all industrial equipment and safety gear on time and never put it off.

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a workshop for Faculty members on “Process parameters Optimization by Taguchi Approach” on 23.10.2021 between 10:00AM to 12:00PM. Prof. Dr.R.Arockiadass, Principal, St.Anne’s College of Engineering and Technology Panruti, was the resource person for the program. All the staff members of the Mechanical department attended the workshop.

The resource person explained the importance of Process parameters Optimization by Taguchi Approach with four input parameters of Spindle speed, feed rate, depth of cut and coolant type, multiple output parameters such as surface roughness, flank wear rate, etc. He explained in detail the eight steps of the Taguchi methodology with hands on training in Mini tab software tools, to find the optimum parameters. Staff learned a lot by this practical workshop.

Entrepreneurial activities may influence a country's economic performance by bringing new products, methods, and production processes to the market and by boosting productivity and competition more broadly. Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a  3 days FDP on "Fusion 360” on from 22.09.2021 to 24.09.2021 between 03:00PM to 05:00PM  Mr.R.Robinson Charly, Application Engineer, USAM CAD Soft India Pvt Ltd, Coimbatore, was the resource person for the program. In the first day he explained the special features and characteristics of Fusion 360. Also he gave the hands on training on design workspace with the model creation of lens and base with holes. In the second day hands on training was given to design cover with fillet and handle. In the third day, he explained in detail about the simulation with static stress and vibrational analysis and also the cam interface to generate CNC program with stock setting, tool selection, parameters selection. Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) organized a Webinar on ''College to Company (C2C)" on 24-08-2021 from 10.00 AM to 11.00 AM.  Er.K.GOPINATH Sr. ENGINEER, RENAULT NISSAN LTD., was the resource person for this program. The Webinar link assigned for all participants at 8.00AM and 9.00AM via e-mail. Nearly 72 participants were attended the Webinar.

The resource person presented about the future development of Mechanical industries and also explained about the opportunities for the Engineers in various industrial and Governmental sectors. The students can enter into high salary Mechanical Jobs in fields like Aerospace, Military, Civil Highway construction, etc., by the GATE exam score. The students were motivated to start preparation for GATE exam from second year onwards and to attend the exam from third year of engineering studies. The students were really benefited to choose their own career path by this webinar.

Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Students Association (MESA) organized a Webinar on '"Composite Materials” on 04.09.2021 between 11:00AM to 12:00PM.  Dr.R.Anbazhagan M.E., M.B.A, Ph.D., ASP- Veltech Hitech Dr. Rangarajan Dr. Sakunthala Engineering College was the resource person for the program. The Webinar link was assigned for all participants at 9.00AM and 10.00AM via e-mail. 60 participants attended the Webinar.

The resource person explained about the opportunities for the Engineers in the Hybrid composite nano materials. He highlighted the need of natural composite in various fields. He also focused the future trend on the Metal matrix composites with fiber reinforcement such as carbon fiber, glass fiber and aramid fiber. Students were really benefited a lot by this interactive webinar.

The Research and Development Cell, in concert with the Mechanical Engineering Department, has planned an Idea Presentation Competition called "Idea Contest'21" for students on December 7, 2021 at the Mechatronics Lab.  The assembly was warmly welcomed by K.Shanmuga Elango, Associate professor Mechanical Department. The Chief Guest was Dr.R.Arokiadass, Principal of our college, who spoke about the importance of idea sharing in engineering. The concept presentation followed, with final year and pre-final year students working together as a team to present their unique ideas in a variety of sectors. Among them are,

Mr.M.Sivamanikandan, Assistant Professor Mechanical Department, gave a vote of thanks at the end of the session. This contest drew more than 35 students and eight faculty members.

The Industry Institute Interaction (III) cell is to promote closer interaction between the academic field and the professional field at industries. In addition to providing Placement support to the students in the prestigious organizations, we also facilitate training of our students in the industries during summer and winter vacations, project work for the students in the final year, continuous Institute-Industry Interactions, alumni activities, participation in exhibitions, fairs, seminars and conferences, counseling of the students on job opportunities, facilitating industry visits and Inviting distinguished speakers to add value in our programs. 

III-Cell organizes expert lecture series during seminar or at the department level in coordination with student organizations. Such lectures familiarize the students and the faculty with the state - of - art industry practices and their correlation with the textbook material. 

Programmes to orient students about industry expectations are organized. Additional seminars are undertaken by the students in each semester to improve learning in the areas like Literature Survey, Personality Development, Group Discussion and Presentation Skills. Moreover, opportunities of Technologies for communication skills enhancement are provided.

Inaugurated the Mechanical Engineering Industry Institute Interaction cell (M E III CELL) on 07.03.2015. Mr.S.V.Venkatesan, M.E., Chief Manager, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd., was the chief guest and he covered the guest lecture on Opportunities available in the industries.
